waters, golden sunsets, wondrous wildlife and beautiful plant life make it a sparkling jewel in earthÔÇÖs treasures. Los Roques has been declared as a National Park and strictly protects its wildlife and environment.

Flora of Los Roques

Thirty eight plant species have been reported in the archipelago of Los Roques. Due to tropical climate of Los Roques only a few plants are strong enough to adapt to the conditions of the archipelago. Even though the flora of Los Roques is not as diverse as its fauna, it is still of immense beauty and add a splash of colors across the landscape of the islands. There is an abundance of thorny vegetation and cacti in Gran Roque. The landscape is also dotted with the bright yellow flowers of ÔÇ£tuna guasabaraÔÇØ. The barrel and cande-labrum specie of cactus is also very common due to their sturdy nature.

When you move to the lower sandy region of the island, you find ÔÇ£sait wortÔÇØ which is low growing specie of vegetation. There are also many sea creepers with thick and brightly colored leaves known as sea pursaine. This plant has the ability to store excess water in its thick leaves. The islandÔÇÖs beauty is also enhanced by the brilliantly colored flowers of

morning glory

which is also a creeper. You also find the extremely important sanbur, which plays an important role in stabilizing the islandÔÇÖs sand.

You will also find four species of mangroves in Los Roques. The most commonly growing are the red mangroves. This specie of mangroves grows the furthest out in the ocean. Closer to the land you will find the black mangroves. Mangroves are of vital importance in coastal areas as they help in stabilizing the land. They help to

build up the land in coastal areas. They also serve as natural habitat for many important animals due to their protective labyrinth of roots.
